Psychometrics:
Source reference: Kawakami et al. (1999): 3 studies using 61 volunteer participants, 469 participants in an outpatient smoking cessation program, and 194 employees at a manufacturing company. Most participants were male and all were from Japan.
• Reliability: Cronbach’s alpha across all samples ranged from 0.74 to 0.81.
• Validity: Across all studies TDS scores correlated with years of smoking and number of cigarettes smoked per day; Male TDS scores also correlated with CO levels.
• Sensitivity ranged from 79.3 to 94.6 and specificity ranged from 65.5 to 80.9 across DSM-III-R, DSM-IV, and ICD-10 diagnoses using the TDS, with cut-off scores of 5 or more and 6 or more.

Utility for Prevalence Surveys:
• Fair: brief but limited psychometric support.

Research Applicability:
• Not widely used.

Copyright, Cost, and Source Issues:
• Available in source reference.
