  Stratifying your sampling to achieve an outcome which is typical of the research population can result in some of the strata being too small for tabular or statistical presentation. For example, carers stratified by gender may give a very small group of males. In this instance, you may choose to increase the size of the male stratum solely in order to get a viable number. This is weighting your sample. In the same way, you may want to weight clusters.
